✨ March of the Writers: Day 10 – Social Distancing ✨

Social media can be a double-edged sword. It offers writers the chance to network, share their work, and find inspiration, but it can also be overwhelming to keep up with every platform. Recently, we’ve seen a trend where some people have stepped back from social media entirely, while certain platforms—like TikTok—have faced potential bans. This pruning of digital spaces has left many wondering which platforms are truly worth their time and energy.

I’m no stranger to this dilemma. While I still maintain a presence on most platforms, I’ve found that some are more rewarding than others. My BlueSky and Facebook accounts are where I see the most engagement and where I genuinely enjoy interacting with other writers. Surprisingly, my X (formerly Twitter) account has also started to show new life, which is encouraging.

I’ve all but stopped using YouTube, though. There are only so many hours in the day, and juggling too many platforms can lead to burnout. I’d rather focus on the places where I find the most value—engaging in meaningful conversations and sharing my writing.

When TikTok faced a potential ban, I felt a mix of concern and relief. I do have an author TikTok and have plans to share poetry readings there, but it’s been hard to find the time. With the ban temporarily lifted, I hope to start using it more intentionally. My goal is to use these platforms to connect with fellow writers and readers, not just add noise to the digital space.

Excerpt from Whiskey and the Autumn Wind by Richard White:

*The amber glass sat heavy in my hand,
A quiet companion to the crackling fire.
Autumn’s breath slipped through the window,
Whispering her name, a ghost on the wind.

I swirled the whiskey, watched it cling to the glass—
How it held on, even as it faded.
Like the way her laughter hung in the air,
Long after the world turned quiet.

The cigar burned down, a slow surrender,
Its smoke curling with the shadows,
And I wondered if she still thought of me
When the leaves rustled their secrets.

Outside, the world turned gold and crimson,
Inside, only the soft hiss of the fire,
And the ache of unsaid words,
Sipped down with every bitter swallow.*

Whiskey and the Autumn Wind is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. You can also request it at your local bookstore.
