March of the Writers Day 16. Do the Evolution: My Journey as a Writer

How do you feel you’ve evolved as a writer from when you started to where you are now?

There was a time when I had no idea what I was doing. When I started writing back in 2010, I was a dreamer with a passion but little understanding of what it truly meant to be a writer. The road to where I am now has been paved with long nights, endless research, trial and error, and a relentless drive to grow. I started as a self-published author with only a rough idea of what that even meant. Now, I stand at the precipice of an incredible milestone—about to graduate at 44 years old Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s in English and Creative Writing, a fiction concentration, and a minor in professional writing from Southern New Hampshire University. And this is only the beginning.

Back then, I was just a writer fumbling my way through storytelling, struggling to grasp structure, technique, and the mechanics of great prose. Today, I am a professional writer with a deep understanding of the craft, a 3.90 GPA, and a future filled with exciting possibilities.

The Indie Author community has been an invaluable part of this journey. I have met fellow writers who have shared their experiences, lifted me up when I doubted myself, and provided a space to learn and grow. The knowledge and camaraderie within this community have shaped me in ways I never could have imagined. The evolution from an aspiring writer to a professional storyteller has been nothing short of transformative.

But the evolution doesn’t stop here. In August, I embark on the next leg of my journey—pursuing my MFA in Creative Writing along with a teacher’s certificate. My dream has expanded from simply writing stories to teaching, mentoring, and helping future writers find their voices. This next step is more than just a degree; it’s the realization of years of dedication and persistence.

Writing is not just about putting words on a page—it’s about growth, perseverance, and never giving up. No matter how much doubt creeps in, no matter how many setbacks arise, keep writing, keep learning, and keep evolving. If my journey proves anything, it’s that persistence pays off, and the best stories are the ones we continue to write—both on the page and in our lives.
