NaPoWriMo Day 9: The Bell Beyond the Fog

By @RWhiteAuthor

For today’s NaPoWriMo prompt, I wanted to capture the haunting weight of sound in stillness. Inspired by the way fog distorts noise and reshapes perception, this poem leans into rhyme and the echo of a singular, specific sound: the distant clang of an old buoy bell, calling out like a forgotten memory lost at sea.

đź“ťThe Bell Beyond the Fog

The sea is a mirror, dark and deep,
Where secrets drift and sailors sleep.

The fog rolls in, a muffled veil,
A ghostly hush on windless sail.

But through the gray, one sound breaks free,
The bell beyond, adrift at sea.

It tolls for none, it tolls for all,
A hollow chime, a siren’s call.

Its metal voice both sharp and low,
Knows every name the waves let go.

And when the dawn reclaims the shore,
That bell will sing of loss once more.
